Batten Institute

Entrepreneurship courses were first offered at the Darden School in 1961. In 1996, a generous gift fron the Batten family of Norfolk, Virginia, and its Landmark Foundation led to the creation of the Batten Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership. In 2000, the Batten Institute was established after a subsequent gift from UVa alumnus Frank Batten, Sr., former CEO and Chairman of Landmark Communications and founder of the Weather Channel. Batten Institute seeks to improve society by creating new knowledge about the transformative power of entrepreneurship and innovation and by cultivating principled, entrepreneurial leaders.
